Portuguese international Hugo Viana, who is on a season-long loan to Sporting Lisbon from Newcastle United, escaped unhurt from a car accident on the way to a training session just outside of Lisbon.

The 21-year-old midfielder lost control of his car after swerving to avoid another vehicle which abruptly switched lanes while crossing a major bridge in Lisbon, Sporting said in a statement.

Viana's car overturned but the player suffered only light scratches and was able to join his teammates at the club's training grounds at Alcochete, some 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of Lisbon, it added.

"In clinical terms he is well. I don't want to say more about the incident, beacuse it is an accident, which always takes its toll even if there is no physical damage," team doctor Jose Gomes Pereira told national news agency Lusa.
