Estonia international goalkeeper Mart Poom joined Arsenal from Premiership rivals Sunderland on a season-long loan deal on transfer deadline day.

The experienced Poom, 33, who has also played for Portsmouth and Derby, arrives at Highbury as cover for much-criticised keeper Jens Lehmann. The German shot-stopper is banned for the Gunners' first two Champions League games this season.

Poom has been sidelined since October with a knee injury and his way back into first-team action with the Black Cats, for whom he made 68 league and cup appearances, was blocked by the summer signings of Kelvin Davis and Joe Murphy.

Heading in the opposite direction, also on a season-long loan, is Arsenal's 20-year-old defender Justin Hoyte, an England Under-21 international.
