Spain's Victor Fernandez has reportedly stepped down as the coach of European champion FC Porto following the team's 3-1 home loss against Sporting Braga on Sunday.

The coach handed in his resignation during a meeting on Monday afternoon with the club's management, Lisbon-based Radio Renascenca said citing unidentified club officials.

Fans booed, whistled and waved white handkerchiefs at Fernandez at the end of Sunday's loss, Porto's biggest home defeat in the Portuguese premier league since 1975.

Porto are currently tied for fourth place along with Sporting Lisbon and cross-town rivals Boavista with 34 points, two points behind leaders Sporting Braga.

Fernandez only took up the reins last August after the sacking of Luigi Del Neri, just two months after his appointment as successor to Jose Mourinho.
