The Portuguese champions did not say what the problem was but local media reported the 25-year-old striker would have a hernia operation in Munich.

Sabrosa, Benfica's top scorer last season with 15 goals, had already been ruled out of Portugal's World Cup qualifier against Estonia on Wednesday with a thigh injury.

"If everything goes well, Simao will be fit by the start of the next season," Benfica club nurse Rodolfo Moura, who will acompany the player to Germany, told sports daily Record.
