American striker Landon Donovan has returned to Major League Soccer from Bayer Leverkusen of the German Bundesliga and will play for the Los Angeles Galaxy, who open the MLS season on Saturday.

Donovan signed with Leverkusen as a teen but was loaned back to MLS to help improve his game. He helped San Jose capture two MLS titles before departing last November to honor his contract with Leverkusen.

After three disappointing months with Leverkusen, Donovan was sent back to MLS by Leverksuen on Thursday just before the league's transfer deadline, according to the league's website.

The Galaxy will open Saturday at Columbus.

Donovan made a backheel pass to set up an Eddie Johnson goal in the 11th minute to open the scoring on Wednesday as the United States defeated visiting Guatemala 2-0 in a 2006 World Cup North American zone qualifying match.
