English Premiership side Bolton, who secured a place in next season's UEFA Cup, are said to be leading the race to sign Porto's South African striker Benni McCarthy.

The player, who has one year left on his contract with the Portuguese side, has been linked to Blackburn, Chelsea and Newcastle but the 24Horas daily reported Tuesday that Bolton were prepared to pay nine million euros (11 million dollars) to allow the player to get out of his contract.

McCarthy, 27, almost went to Everton last season before Porto quashed the deal at the last minute.

He was Porto's top scorer this season with 11 goals.

Porto, who won the Champions League last season but struggled to qualify this year, have already agreed to sell Portuguese midfielders Maniche and Costinha, along with Greek defender Yourkas Seitaridis, to Dynamo Moscow.

The Russian premier league club put down 30 million euros for the trio, who all signed five-year contracts.
