Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has pulled out of Germany's squad for next month's Confederations Cup because of a stress fracture in his right foot.

The 31-year-old, who helped Liverpool to Champions League glory last week, won the last of his 58 German caps during the Euro 2004 finals when Germany crashed out of the competition at the group stage.

"It is a real shame for Didi (Hamann)," said Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann. "It was important for him to see how we have developed as a team. I am sure he would have fitted in."

Hamann is the second key player Klinsmann has lot to injury with Bayern Munich left back Philipp Lahm out for six months after suffering a cruciate ligament injury.

"Hamann's absence is a big a blow as is the injury to Lahm but it is better this happens now than next year," added Klinsmann.

World Cup hosts Germany are paired with Australia, Argentina and Tunisia in Group A of the Confederations Cup, which runs from June 15 to 29.
