Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given has had a stomach operation to repair a tear in his lower abdominals, the Premiership club said.
The 30-year-ol Given had to leave the Upton Park pitch near the end of Magpies' 2-0 Premiership victory over West Ham on Sunday after colliding with striker Marlon Harewood.
Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder told nufc.co.uk: "Shay has had surgery to repair a small tear in his lower stomach. He is comfortable and will have a short stay in hospital.
"We'll let things settle down now and it's too early to be putting any date on when he'll be expected back."
