Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard makes his 350th appearance for the Merseysiders in Sunday's clash at Manchester United.

Anfield boss Rafael Benitez believes the England man will be key to his side's hopes in a game crucial to their title hopes.

Liverpool are down in 11th spot in the table, eight points behind leaders United.

"We know that Steven was amazing last season because to score 23 goals for a midfielder is unbelievable," said Benitez.

"This year we know that some of the players need to improve after the World Cup but I can tell you that Steven is working hard and showing great commitment in every training session."

Gerrard missed Liverpool's 1-0 Champions League victory in Bordeaux on Wednesday with a hamstring injury but Benitez can't wait to welcome him back.

"Stevie knows he is a key player for us. As I said, his commitment in every training session is fantastic and I am sure he will be in good form at the weekend. He knows he can score goals and we know we need his goals," added the manager.
