Australia midfielder Josip Skoko has rejected a proposed loan move to Championship club Stoke City, despite a lack of first-team opportunities at Wigan.

The Australia international has made 11 appearances for high-flying Wigan, only five of them in the Premiership, after joining them in the summer from Turkish club Genclerbirligi.

Skoko, 30, needs more regular football to ensure he remains part of Guus Hiddink's plans for the World Cup in Germany in June and July, but was not prepared to drop out of the top flight.

"I had an enquiry from Stoke during the week for Skoko on loan, and I put it to Josip and he turned it down," Wigan boss Paul Jewell confirmed.

"It's no problem. That's the only enquiry I have had for my players during the transfer window."
