The 46-year-old AC Milan coach is being touted as one of the main candidates for the job, which will be vacated by Juan Ramon Lopez Caro at the end of the season.
"Who wouldn't want to go to Real?," Ancelotti told SKY television after AC Milan's 4-0 thrashing of Udinese on Sunday, which left them 10 points behind Serie A leaders Juventus with nine games of the season left.
"The problem is when. I believe there will be a time for me to do it."
Ancelotti's current contract ends in 2007 and the club have always maintained they will soon offer him an extension.
But they may not be so keen to do so if the club go another season without a trophy.
They are highly unlikely to catch Juventus in the league and their only realistic hope of some silverware is the Champions League.
Last season they reached the final, but lost to Liverpool after a penalty shoot-out.
Lopez Caro, who replaced Wanderley Luxemburgo as Real's coach three months ago, is set to return to managing the reserve team when the season ends.
