Schalke 04 and Denmark midfielder Christian Poulsen will join AC Milan at the end of the season on a free transfer.

Thursday's edition of the Gazzetta dello Sport claims that Poulsen had originally agreed to join Villarreal, and even signed a pre-contract deal with the Spanish club.

But after several meetings with Milan's directors, Poulsen performed a u-turn and decided he would prefer to play in Italy.

The Gazzetta said Poulsen, who was spat at by Italy's Francesco Totti at Euro 2004, has to pay Villarreal 850,000 euros (one million dollars) as compensation for breaking his deal, which Milan will probably cover.

Poulsen's current contract with Schalke 04 ends this summer.
