Middlesbrough defender Emanuel Pogatetz will sit out the rest of the season after suffering serious facial injuries in the club's 2-0 UEFA Cup quarter-final first leg defeat by FC Basel.
Boro confirmed on Friday that the 23-year-old Austrian had broken his nose and fractured his jaw as a result of a clash of heads with Basel's Mladen Petric during Thursday's match in Switzerland.
Pogatetz, nicknamed 'mad dog' by Boro fans, suffered the injury just five days after he had five stitches removed from a wound caused by a collision with Bolton's Kevin Davies.
