German striker Patrick Helmes struck with two second-half goals as a weakened Bayern Munich side were beaten 3-1 in their pre-season friendly at second division Cologne on Tuesday night.

Minus new triple signings French midfielder Franck Ribery, Italian World Cup winner Luca Toni and striker Miroslav Klose as well as German international midfielder Bastian Schweinsteigger German giants Bayern fielded a largely experimental side in Cologne.

Bayern took an early lead when Jose Ernesto Sosa struck in the third minute, but Cologne's Milivoje Novakovic scored two minutes before the break as it finished 1-1 at the break.

Then Cologne captain Helmes struck with two goals in as many minutes, on 53 and 54 minutes, to seal the win for the second division side.

Bayern open their Bundesliga season at newly-promoted Hansa Rostock on August 11.
