Bolton signed Poland forward Grzegorz Rasiak on loan from second-tier Southampton until the end of the season on Thursday's final day of January's transfer window.
The 29-year-old, who has previously played in the Premier League for Tottenham and Derby, bolsters a Bolton strikeforce depleted by the recent departure of Nicolas Anelka to title-chasers Chelsea.
"He is a big, powerful centre forward who knows where the back of the net is," said Megson, whose side are currently two points above the relegation zone.
"He will bring more firepower to the squad and allow us extra attacking options."
Megson, who had already added Aston Villa defender Gary Cahill to the playing staff at the Reebok Stadium, insisted there was no element of desperation in his transfer window recruitment policy.
"They are not panic measures. They are players we have scouted and had watched," he said.
"We have spent a lot of money trying to make the team better."
Meanwhile, Sweden winger Christian Wilhelmsson has joined Spanish club Deportivo La Coruna on loan.
Wilhelmsson arrived on a similar deal from French side Nantes but Megson added: "It has not quite worked out for Chris.
"His opportunities were going to be limited here, so we have allowed him to go to Deportivo and wish him all the best."
