Rangers cruised to the top of the Scottish Premier League with a double from former Celtic player Kenny Miller helping secure a 4-2 win against their Old Firm rivals at Parkhead.

Both teams finished with ten-men with Daniel Cousin and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink seeing red in the second-half.

The teams had gone in level at half-time after a superb solo effort from Daniel Cousin was cancelled out by Celtic's Georgios Samaras.

But Miller came back to haunt his former employers scoring twice either side of a Pedro Mendes wonder strike from 30 yards out before Shunsuke Nakamura scored a consolation goal in injury time.

Rangers manager Walter Smith was delighted with his side's victory. "At half-time 1-1 was just about right," Smith said.

"In the second half we managed to get a second and added one quite quickly after that which gave us the upper hand. It was always going to be difficult for Celtic to come back after that.

"In the end it was a terrific victory for us at a place where it is difficult for any team to get a win."

Gordon Strachan said he thought his Celtic side had coped well with Rangers until the second-half.

"At half-time I couldn't see that coming. I thought it was a good game and at half-time we were looking forward to the second-half.

"Through some bizarre goals and one excellent strike we found ourselves in a position where it was hard to win the game."

In the first half both teams struggled to create many clear-cut chances.

Celtic striker Samaras had the half's first effort on target in the 22nd minute but his downward header was easily saved by Allan McGregor.

The first half came to life in the 37th minute with a superb solo goal from Cousin.

The Gabonese striker ran past Mark Wilson on the right wing before cutting in and putting the ball past Artur Boruc from a tight angle into the far corner of the net.

The Rangers fans had little time to celebrate before Samaras put Celtic level in the 40th minute. Shaun Maloney knocked down a Aiden McGeady cross which the Rangers defence failed to deal with and Samaras knocked in from a couple of yards out.

The away support went wild in the 52nd minute when Miller put Rangers ahead with a sweet volley from a Kevin Thomson cross that bounced past Boruc into the net.

Mendes made it 3-1 in the 62nd minute with a wonder strike from 30 yards out. The Portuguese midfielder met Davis' corner from the left with power and pace and his low drive flew past Boruc, who had no chance.

Things turned nasty in the 75th minute when Cousin was sent off after picking up his second yellow card for a foul on McManus.

Celtic were reduced to ten-men a minute later when substitute Vennegoor of Hesselink, who had only been on three minutes, was shown a straight red for kicking out at Kirk Broadfoot.

A horrendous error from Boruc allowed Miller to get his second of the game in the 79th minute.

The Polish keeper spilled a cross from Broadfoot which fell to Miller who put the ball into the open goal from a couple of yards out.

Nakamura scored a consolation goal for Celtic in injury time when his free-kick was deflected past McGregor by Broadfoot.

On Saturday Kilmarnock went top of the SPL with goals from Gavin Skelton and Danny Invincible securing a 2-0 win against Dundee United at Tannadice.

Motherwell picked up their first win of the season with John Sutton's late goal sealing a 1-0 win away to Hibernian.

Darren Mackie scored the only goal as Aberdeen won 1-0 against St Mirren at Love Street.

Inverness CT took three points from their match at Falkirk with Don Cowie and Dougie Imrie cancelling out Mark Stewart's opener.

Hearts recorded their first away win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Hamilton with goals from Marius Zaliukas and Andrew Driver and Derek Lyle for Hamilton.
