Fiorentina without the suspended Gabriel Batistuta could not find a way to threaten Girondins Bordeaux in France.
The Bordeaux team dominated but the point earned by the Italians keeps them at the top of the section and they can thank goalkeeper Francesco Toldo for saving them from defeat.
Toldo's reflexes and positioning proved first rate as the French side came on strong in the second half and the Fiorentina side sat back to defend their point.
In the absence of their Argentinian star the Viola were anything but adventurous although Enrico Chiesa forced a good save from Ulrich Rame with a low drive after half an hour.
Bordeaux deserved to take an early lead in the ninth minute when the referee missed a clear handball on the line from Angelo Di Livio that slapped away a goal bound shot Johan Micoud. Di Livio would have been sent off as well but the Italians survived.
Lilian Laslandes produced the best save from Toldo on the night when he rose to meet a cross with a powerful header but the Florence hero jumped and tipped the fine effort over the bar.
