Gabriel Batistuta had one chance in this game and took it to devastating effect to knock Arsenal out of the Champions League.

While the Fiorentina fans can again hail their Argentine hero goalkeeper Francesco Toldo produced a top quality save to preserve their narrow lead at Wembley when he defied Kanu from point blank range after a goal mouth scramble after a shot from substitute Davor Suker had cannoned off the post and into the danger zone in front of goal. Toldo was left stranded by the Suker shot but recovered to slap away Kanu's shot from a few feet out.

This piece of brilliance gave the Italian side the nerve to withstand late pressure in this scrappy game and secure a win that puts them into the next stage.

Their Argentine star produced a spectacular finish to win this game after a powerful Jorge Heinrich run from midfield. In a tight game of few chances and little area for manoeuvre suddenly there was space in front of the German in the 75th minute and he carried the ball into the heart of the Arsenal defence. At the right moment he put Batistuta clear at an acute angle wide on the right of the penalty area and the striker hit a rocket shot into the roof of the net to bury Arsenal. It was the nearest he came to the Arsenal goal all night and it proved enough.

Batistuta was booked in only the 2nd minute for a late tackle on Arsenal right back Lee Dixon and his partner Enrico Chiesa missed the best Italian chance of the first half when he glanced a header wide when he was put clear in front of goal in the 15th minute. Chiesa also produced a, powerful hook shot from distance that missed a post by a metre but Fiorentina were fairly cautious after a good start to the game.

Nwankwo Kanu missed the best home chance for the London side when a flick through by Bergkamp in the 38th minute put him in on goal but he took the shot at the first attempt as the ball dropped in front of him and the Nigerian skied the chance.
