Glasgow Rangers 1 Valencia 2

First Published: Oct 27, 1999

Glasgow Rangers must now avoid defeat in their last game at Bayern Munich to progress to the next round of the Champions League.

This home defeat by Valencia and Bayern's loss in Holland to PSV means that next week's game will decide the second qualification place from Group F.

Valencia played well again especially in an impressive first half and made certain of their place in the next stage where they have several players able to damage the bigger clubs.

First among these is their Argentine star Claudio Lopez whose runs and touches set him out as the finest player on the pitch at Ibrox Park last night.

Rangers rallied well in the second half to produce passages of sustained pressure but Valencia were leading 2-0 at half time and it proved too difficult to come back.

Jorge Albertz almost managed to pull the Scottish champions level in the last minute but his angled shot went past the far post as several team mates stretched to try and turn the ball in from close range.

Valencia can thank their first half showing for the victory.

Captain Giazka Mendieta gave the visitors the lead when he hooked in a cross from the edge of the penalty area in the 34th minute when there appeared to be no danger.

Lopez closed the half with a magnificent run that took him up to goalkeeper Charbonnier to slide the ball wide of his dive and into the far corner.

Australian Craig Moore put the home side back in the game with a deflected shot from close range in the 59th minute.
