SS Lazio ensured a first place finish in Group H to put them among the seeds for the second stage draw with this home draw with a determined Bayer Leverkusen side.

Bayer are left to contest second place and the other qualification spot with Kyiv Dynamo and need the Rome club to get something from their trip to the Ukraine next week.

Pavel Nedved took only a minute to score in the Italian capital after a panic reaction form the Bundesliga side to an in swinging cross from Sinisa Mihajlovic. The Germans let the ball drop to the ground and tried to fight it away but the cross dropped to Nedved who struck it into the net.

Ulf Kirsten proved his worth again for Bayer with a decisive finish after good Lazio pressure had seen the German side camped in defence for the first half hour of the game. Substitute Markus Happe's cross from the left was touched by a defender into Kirsten's path and he smacked the ball into the net.

Marcelo Salas illuminated the second half with an hilarious miss in front of goal. He skewed his shot wide with an open target to aim at and Lazio should have won the game with the amount of possession they maintained in an open contest.
