Olympique Marseille found satisfaction in defeat when the score line from Croatia reached them following this 3-2 loss in Austria.
Manchester United's 2-1 win at Zagreb had put OM clear into the second place of Group D and they now progress to the next stage after the formality of a match at home to Zagreb next week.
Sturm Graz took their cue from Galatasary on Tuesday night who were big winners at Hertha berlin. Every team in the Groups is capable of winning games but consistency and good away form hold the key to making the later stages.
Graz were put into the lead by Roman Maehlich with a close range finish in the 17th minute but suffered a set back when OM substitute Christophe Dugarry found an equaliser. The French international was returning to action after a knee operation and a,lucky escape on a technicality after testing positive for steroids but he stabbed the ball in at the far post after a low cross in the 51st minute.
Tomislav Kocijan headed the home side back in front in the 62nd minute and OM were reduced to ten men when Patrick Blondeau was sent off for a second booking following a 68th minute foul.
Dugarry then found the target as he turned and shot at goal from inside the penalty area in the 78th minute but Kocijan had the final score with a powerful 84th minute drive.
Graz can ow chase a UEFA Cup place with a third place finish but need to try and hold Manchester United at Old Trafford next week.
