First Published: Sep 22, 1999

Arsenal outclassed a defensive Swedish side at Wembley but needed injury time goals to beat AIK Stockholm.

Substitute Thierry Henry almost let a Kanu through pass slip away from him but he fired into the far right hand corner of the goal.

The French star then collected a pass from Dennis Bergkamp pass after an AIK corner and with all the Swedish players stranded upfield he fed Davor Suker who slid the ball into the net to seal the victory.

AIK were put under heavy pressure throiughout but rallied at the start of the second half and scored in the 53rd minute. The Arsenal pattern was disrupted after a long injury delay at the start of the second half as Gilles Grimandi was treated. AIK took advantage of a lapse in defensive concentration and captain Kristen Nordin strode onto a through pass straight through the centre of the Arsenal defence to finish low and hard past goalkeeper Alex Manninger.

Fredrik Ljungberg produced a mazy run in the 27th minute into the heart of the AIK defence and produced a low shot on the run to give the London club a deserved lead.

They could have claimed three or four goals in a first half dominated by the 'home' side playing at the famous old stadium.

Dennis Bergkamp fluffed the best chance after excellent approach play from Davor Suker who played a one-two with the Dutchman to lift the ball into the area but Bergkamp drove the ball as it dropped straight at Matthias Asper in the AIK goal.

Martin Keown hit the underside of the crossbar with a cushioned header in the 70th minute and Henry shot wide when in on goal after Suker released the French player with a back heel in the 82nd minute.
