Two goals from Savio cheered a meagre crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu as only 15,000 turned out to see Real dismantle the small Norwegian side from Molde.
With Silvio Berlusconi already campaigning against the latest Champions league format Real president Lorenzo Sanz could soon add his voice to the complaints if the Madrid faithful cannot stir themselves to show up for the competition the club helped to invent in 1955.
Sanz has massive wages to pay and is waiting for King Juan Carlos to waive almost £100 million of debt owed by the Spanish club and the small crowd will not even pay Nicolas Anelka's rent for his brothers. Anelka by the way missed out on the goal spree by Real and was taken off after 55 minutes to localised booing from the Ultras.
Savio was the bright light of the evening and made the first goal for Morientes as the Spanish side tried out the 4-4-2 that is supposed to help Anelka maximise his speed advantage. Instead Morientes looked more mobile, happier and fitter and he headed in after a great Savio run in the 27th minute.
The Brazilian looked full of running all night and his close control took him past three defenders to score in the 60th minute and he converted a 71st minute penalty before Lindbaek hit a consolation with a header.
Guti took less than a minute to score after that surprise with a low drive from the edge of the area.
