AC Milan 2 Galatasary 1

First Published: Sep 22, 1999

Galatasary's spirited raids in the last stages of this game on the Milan goal were all turned back by outstanding goalkeeper Christian Abbiati and Milan can thank him for this narrow win.

The Turks recovered from an injury set back to dominate the second half but the Italians held out to take control of Group H. Galatasary made a double substitution in the hope to raising their game at the start of the second half but saw Akyel Fatih limp out of the game in the 49th minute to leave them a man short.

Despite this they scored shortly after when Daval Umit stroked in a cross underneath a flailing Abbiati.

Arif directed a header wide and then produced an excellent save from Abbiati in the dying seconds of the game as the Italian needed two hits at an angled chip from the midfielder to bat the ball away as he fell backwards towards his goal as the Turks put Milan under intense pressure in the last five minutes of the game.

The Milan side were able to claim a win thanks to two first half efforts just before the break.

Leonardo was put clear by Bierhoff in the 44th minute to chest control the pass and rive the ball past fellow Brazilian international Taffarel and the midfielder cross for Andriy Shevchenko to produce an excellent finish on the run.
