Manchester United were inspired to terminate Sturm Graz in the Arnold Schwarzenegger stadium with three goals in a 16 minute first half spell.

They failed to add to this in the second half as the home side rallied but the result was never in doubt.

The home side had started well and forced a save from Raimond van der Gouw early on but poor goalkeeping allowed the champions to seize control of this game.

Graz goalkeeper Kazimierz Sidorczuk did all but score twice for United as they applied pressure. He batted out an in swinging corner when the easier option was to hold the ball and it reached captain Roy Keane who let the ball bounce and then drove it high straight back at the Polish goalkeeper w\ho walked back into his net and let the shot hit the roof of the net to surprise all the players.

Five minutes later Sidorczuk dived away from a powerful downward header by Dwight Yorke who met a driven corner and the ball rolled over the line. Andy Cole completed the first half rout when he ran onto a through pass to hold off a challenge and slide the ball wide of the pitiful Polish 'keeper for a low finish.
