PSV Eindhoven 1 Valencia 1

First Published: Sep 22, 1999

Claudio Lopez scored in the fourth minute to put Valencia close to a win in Eindhoven and they were only denied by a suspect penalty award with only twenty minutes of the game remaining.

Lopez was again watched by scouts from SS Lazio who remain keen to sign the Argentine and he produced another good display of front running although his goal was a lucky effort.

Lopez looked offside when he was put clear to hit the ball wide and into the net on the run but the goal stood and the Spaniards showed some attacking promise in the first session which was not built upon after the interval as they sat back to try and protect their lead.

Van Nistelrooy hit a post with a curling shot in the 30th minute and PSV can thank the striker for earning the penalty which saved the game in the 71st minute. The striker appeared to fall over but a spot kick was awarded and he converted the penalty with a low drive.
