Girondins Bordeaux 2 Spartak Moscow 1

First Published: Sep 29, 1999

Girondins Bordeaux moved into the lead of Group G after this win against their closest rivals in the section.

The French side have belied a poor start to the domestic season with their Champions League play and good form saw them convert their best chances to stay ahead of the technically assured Russian side.

The home side took an early lead when star striker Sylvain Wiltord drove in a volley from inside the penalty area after a good cross from Corentin Martins. Lilian Laslandes set up what turned out to be the winner with a driven cross for Johan Micoud to head into the net.

Spartak rallied after this and scored in the 64th minute when striker Artyom Bezrodny finished with a low shot from inside the penalty area.
