First Published: Sep 29, 1999

New signing Giovanni added to his reputation with Olympiakos with two goals to send the Greek side to second place in Group E.

Brazilian Giovanni was dumped by FC Barcelona after a difficult season last term under coach Louis Van Gaal. His fiend Rivaldo pleaded with the Barca management to keep the player but he was off loaded in the summer to the increasingly grateful Athens outfit.

Olympiakos' other goal was also scored by a Brazilian - Luciano - in a comfortable victory.

Giovanni was put through on goal in the 15th minute and made no mistake with a low drive. Andreas Lund headed an equaliser in the 58th minute against the run of pay but eleven minutes later Giovanni produced the telling contribution of he night. He beat two defenders on a mazy run into the penalty area before a powerful finish lashed the ball into the net. It was his fourth goal in the competition so far.

Luciano was set up by the bouyant Giovanni to produce a memorable drive from the edge of the penalty area to complete the win.
