Manchester United 2 Olympique Marseille 1

Two late goals from Manchester United rescued an unbeaten home record that now stretches back to last December.

United used second half dominance to pull themselves ahead of a hard running French side.

Paul Scholes fell on a run through the defence in the 83rd minute and saw the ball ricochet off OM goalkeeper Stephane Porato into his path for him to scoop the ball over the line from inside the goalmouth.

Only three minutes earlier Andy Cole had scored with an overhead kick after a header across the edge of the penalty area from Jaap Stam's header.

The goals made up for a first half overshadowed by a howling error in the United defence.

Henning Berg was caught turning with the ball into the path of Bakayoko and he robbed the Norwegian defender to carry the ball wide into the left hand side of the penalty area and shoot on the run as Raimond Van der Gouw came out of goal. The Ivory Coast player's shot went through the 'keeper's legs and deflected high into the roof of the net.

Andy Cole missed the target with a shot on the run that took him right through the OM defence and goalkeeper Stephane Porato parried a close range effort from Dwight Yorke.

United dominated the first half possession but David Beckham's withdrawn role on the right hand side allowed the French defence to settle and match the treble champions with their passing. United often had the better chances though and always looked likely to find the target in the end.
