Marcelo Salas celebrated his new fat pay deal with SS Lazio by scoring twice to add some gloss to the score line for the Italian club.
Maribor were down to men from the 20th minute when defender Geri Tipi was sent off for his second booking but the home side gave poor value for their man advantage until Salas - who signed a new contract to stay with the club until 2004 two days ago - entered the action as a second half substitute. Tipi was sent off for two hacks at Simone Inzaghi and the striker put Lazio into the lead when he arrived on the blind side to knock in a low cross in the 61st minute after hitting the bar with a shot on the run in the 14th minute.
Sergio Conceicao had provided the cross for the first goal and he was on the end of a Paolo Negro pull back to angle a drive into the net.
Then Salas took over with two close range efforts. He headed in a Roberto Mancini cross to at the far post as Maribor lost their earlier determined defending and leapt to volley in another cross to the far post in 76th minute. The score line flattered Lazio though and they showed few ideas to break down the ten man team in the fist hour.
