Bayer Leverkusen 1 Kyiv Dynamo 1

Kyiv Dynamo coach Valentin Lobanovsky watched this draw from his hospital bed on television after falling ill with a bout of bronchitis.

The 60 year old was replaced on the team bench by his assistant Alexei Mikhailichenko who inspired his charges to a compact defensive display that held out for the most part against the Bundesliga leaders.

It was the first point of the competition so far for the Ukraine champions who have suffered a lot with the timing of their domestic season which winds down just as the rest of Europe goes into full training.

Ulf Kirsten put Leverkusen in front with a low drive after Carsten Ramelow had put the veteran forward clear in the 57th minute. Goalkeeper Adam Matysek allowed the ball to slip away from him for Andriy Husin to hit the ball into an empty net and allow Kyiv back into the game.
