FC Porto overcame a half empty home ground but could not seal a victory against Bayern Munich who take a vital away goal back to Germany for the second leg after an 80th minute equaliser from Paolo Sergio.
Porto have more than 140,000 club members but their ground was less than half full after the Portuguese champions priced their tickets at £50 for the tie.
The fans who could not afford the steep price missed one of the best Porto performances of the last few years but Bayern hung on and even afer a poor showing in this game now have all the advantages in the next game.
Porto's passing dominated this match but a dull first half saw them create few direct chances on goal. Carpuccio almost scored when Oliver Kahn failed to hold a shot and with seconds remaining in the half Brazilian striker Mario Jardel almost cashed in a similar chance when Kahn fluffed a save.
Porto's Brazilian star made up for the wasted chance in the 47th minute when he met a deep cross from the left with a towering header to put the home side in front.
Bayern never managed to surpress the runs and passes of the Porto midfield and their poor recent form looked like costing them a win until a low drive from Paolo Sergio from almost nothing found the target with ten minutes to go.
This match was a repeat of the 1987 European Çup final which Porto won 2-1 but there was no repeat of that score line as Bayern held on for the draw.
