Bayern Munich win 3-2 on aggregate

Bayern Munich left it late to reach the Champions League semi finals.

A close range header from Brazilian striker Jardel in the last minute put FC Porto into a 2-1 lead that needed a desperate late gamble by the home team to defeat.

Central defender Thomas Rinke went up into attack and put Bayern into a decisive lead when he headed a driven cross into the net.

Porto were close to forcing extra time at least and showed much of their skill and passing game from the first leg.

Bayern contributed long spells of attacks to the game but the Portuguese champions held them off and concentrated on counter attacks. The Germans had the advantage of an away goal from the first leg and took a 15th minute lead when Paulo Sergio headed in a cross from Michael Tarnat but the late goal from Jardel almost produced an upset. Bayern responded so quickly that they settled the issue but it was no a completely convincing display. They hammered Real Madrid in both matches during the second phase two months ago and must now meet the Spaniards again in the semi finals.
