First Published: Apr 27, 2000

Venezuela collapsed in front of their own fans and Argentina top the 2002 World Cup qualifying section for South America after their second win in a row.

The visitors played a hard running and adventurous game and sensed the home team were there for the beating which duly arrived.

The Maracaibo crowd saw Venezuela concede their first goal after only eight minutes when they failed to deal with a driven corner.

The ball crossed the face of the home goal with real purpose from Veron's striker and Roberto Ayala jumped to direct a header down and into the net for 1-0.

Veron then created the second for Ariel Ortega with a dipping cross that saw the Parma AC man fall to the ground and head thee ball in after Argentina survived a lengthy spell of Venezuelan possession.

The second half lacked action until the 77th minute when Hernan Crespo dribbled into the penalty area but over ran the ball slightly allowing Ortega to grab his second of the game with a clipped finish.

Crespo scored the best goal of the night to wrap up a good win for his side by carrying the ball in the 81st minute past a defender and dummying the goalkeeper to walk the ball into an empty net.
