An assistant referee was hit by an object thrown from the crowd in La Paz as Colombia managed a 1-1 draw with Bolivia.
The incident could lead to repercussions for the Bolivian FA after the game was held up by ten minutes while the official received treatment.
The unrest among the support was caused when players clashed over a foul and Bolivia captain Erwin Sanchez and Colombia's Mario Yepes were dismissed during the stoppage that saw the official treated for a knock on the head.
Sanchez had scored the home side's goal in the 17th minute with a low drive as Bolivia cashed in Colombia's problems with the high altitude venue and a noon kick-off time. The heat led to plenty of excuses from the visitors after the game but the kick-off time was dictated by the cable television network which holds the rights to Bolivia's home matches in the 2002 World Cup qualifying campaign.
The game turned on the half hour mark when Bolivia thought they had taken a 2-0 lead but Victor Hugo Antelo's low finish was ruled out for offside.
Bolivia were distracted and upset by the decision and seconds later a 32nd minute cross into their penalty area squirmed loose and Jairo Castillo buried the chance.
