2002 World Cup - Chile 1 Peru 1

First Published: Apr 27, 2000

Peru impressed throughout this match but conceded an equaliser that gives Chile their first point of the 2002 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Chile and Peru resumed their 1997 rivalry when Chile won 4-1 in Santiago to help their qualification for France 98 on goal difference and edge out Peru.

Chile have yet to win in the 2002 qualifying campaign and were hammered 4-1 by Argentina earlier this month.

Ivan Zamorano was denied a convincing claim for a penalty in the 12th minute and the visitors survived that scare to take a 38th minute lead when Juan Jayo hit a dipping drive from thirty metres into the net.

It only took Chile two minutes to equalise but they needed a good finish from centre back Javier Margas after a well worked free kick. Margas received a gentle pass from the restart and slammed the ball low into the net from the edge of the penalty area.

If the Santiago crowd were then expecting better things from their men they were disappointed.

Claudio Pizarro almost settled the game on the break when he rounded Nelson Tapia in the Chile goal in the 68th minute but drove a show from a difficult angle against a post.
