European Supercup - Galatasary 2 Real Madrid 1

First Published: Aug 25, 2000

Mario Jardel scored the first golden goal to win a European club competition as Galatasary beat Real Madrid 2-1 to win the Supercup.

The Brazilian has now scored ten goals in his first five matches for his new club and Galatasary collect a £7 million win bonus from the Turkish FA for winning their second European trophy in four months - the only two European trophies to be won so far by Turkish clubs.

The winning goal - in the 111th minute - came from a run by Fatih. The substitute chested a ball into his path and ran down the right flank to sweep a low cross into the swing of Jardel's right foot and the striker swept the ball into the net first time giving Iker Casillas no chance to save.

The goal won a scrappy and tedious encounter in which Real Madrid clearly showed they had still more than two weeks to the new Liga season in terms of fitness and speed of thought while Galatasary switched tactics from their previous league and Champions League matches by playing only one player - Jardel - in attack and it paid off.

Real equalised late in the second half when Raul converted a fortunate penalty.

Savio hit a cross at Suat which hit his arm and referee Benko blew for a penalty kick in a harsh decision.

Raul's steady shot brought Real back into the game in the 79th minute. For most of the match they had trailed to an earlier penalty for the UEFA Cup holders.

The penalty was awarded for a clumsy foul across the run of Okun by Ivan Campo.

There was no question of a mistake by referee Gunter Benko despite him being some distance from the action when he blew for the foul.

Mario Jardel made a decisive strike from the penalty spot by sending Iker Casillas the wrong way.

The £18 million summer signing from FC Porto looked at the right hand side of the goal and stroked the ball to the left hand side.

The goal came after about two minutes of Galatasary pressure but before that Mircea Lucescu's side had been content to defend and hope to send Jardel clear on the break.

This never looked like happening as Real got their pass and move game going across midfield with only highly rated Galatasary star Emre providing much resistance.

There were several heavy challenges in the session which at times was played like a testimonial.

Luis Figo ran onto a loose ball on the right hand side of the penalty area and sent in a low right foot shot after a body swerve on 11 minutes. A few seconds later Figo curled a left sided free kick over the bar but four minutes later Real got their best chance of the half.

Roberto Carlos swept a low cross from a deep position on the left wing across the penalty area which cut through the Turkish defence allowing Raul to arrive on the stretch at the far post but the striker could not control the shot as he fell and it sailed over the bar.

Raul also sent in a 28th minute shot on the turn from the edge of the area which was just over the bar and he came close with an optimistic chip in the 34th minute.

Veteran star - and former Luis Figo team mate at FC Barcelona five years ago - Gheorghe Hagi forced a low diving save from Casillas in the 37th minute when he powered in a free kick from twenty metres after the ball was touched off to him in a central position.

The second half faded in interest and quality on a humid night at the Stade Louis II ground in Monaco but it started with Roberto Carlos slamming a free kick against Taffarel's arms from thirty metres.

Raul slashed the ball over after good work down the left wing by substitute Munitis in the 62nd minute.

Savio saw a low drive from a Luis Figo corner saved low at his near post by Taffarel in the 87th minute.

Galatasary saw substitute Hasan hit two long range efforts and Umit Davala hit a long range shot narrowly wide in the 92nd minute before the golden goal extra time started.
