Champions League - SS Lazio 0 Leeds United 1

SS Lazio are set to fire coach Sven Goran Eriksson after Alan Smith's 81st minute winner shocked the club's fans in Rome and thrilled Leeds United.

Eriksson's future is to be discussed to president Sergio Cragnotti and the club's supporters and shareholders want him dumped after he accepted an offer to coach England next summer with the English FA asking for the Swede to also be involved in World Cup qualifiers next March.

Cragnotti is set to ask club president Dino Zoff to return to management.

Lazio's second defeat of the second stage of the Champions League makes it extremely unlikely that the Italian champions will make it into the quarter finals of the competition they spent £75 million to win in the summer.

Smith scored on a break away when he combined to carry the ball up field with Mark Viduka and edge past defender Pancaro with the Croatian setting Smith up for a low shot past Peruzzi.

Leeds could have scored twice in a minute in the 68th minute when Lee Bowyer crossed for Mark Viduka to shoot but the ball deflected off his marker Attilio Lombardo to force a great save from goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi who tipped the ball over the bar.

From the resulting corner kick Jonathon Woodgate drove just wide from the edge of the penalty area.

Lazio had started the half with a good run from Pavel Nedved but he hit his shot into the side netting.

Both teams had chances cleared off the goal line in the first half.

After fifteen minutes Eirik Bakke headed a free kick at goal only for veteran midfielder Lombardo to dig the ball away from danger.

Pavel Nedved then crossed towards the end of the half for Marcelo Salas to get into space and head down but centre back Woodgate was on the line to clear.

Earlier Veron had set up another good chance for the Italian champions when he produced a corner kick that Giuseppe Pancaro headed onto the crossbar after a good jump.
