Champions League - Arsenal 2 Bayern Munich 2

First Published: Dec 05, 2000

Bayern Munich came from 2-0 down to save themselves in London.

After defeat in Moscow two weeks ago Arsenal really needed to

Arsenal seemed to seal the win when Nwankwo Kanu cashed in a quick free kick by Patrick Vieira - who took the free kick with the ball rolling - when the Nigerian star was free and passed the ball into the net for the second goal for an excellent finish.

This provoked a collapse by Arsenal.

Seconds after Kanu's goal Martin Keown and Tony Adams failed to clear an Effenberg free kick and Michael Tarnat was unmarked to drive low and hard into the corner of the net.

Arsenal were clearly unsettled and resorted to physical tactics as Bayern were revived. Gilles Grimandi was again guilty of consistent foul play.

Mehmet Scholl curled in an excellent free kick that Alex Manninger was poorly position to save and Bayern were level.

Early in the second session Ljungberg had wasted a great chance to score when he was released in front of goal by a great tackle from Patrick Vieira and after a three touches with his left foot he hit high and wide.

Following a delay of twenty minutes for a security alert Bayern Munich settled quickly and Arsenal hardly touched the ball.

They did not threaten though in those brief three minutes and Arsenal were able to end an unwelcome run for their strikers.

No Arsenal forward had scored from open play for seven matches until Thierry Henry made the most of a great opportunity.

Robert Pires created the goal by carrying the ball down the left and spotting the run by Nwankwo Kanu, he fed the ball through but the Nigerian was tackled. The ball ran kindly for Henry who sent Oliver Kahn the wrong way and sank a light shot into the net.

The home side were then free to suffocate the German champions with hard running and tackling.

Stefan Effenberg and Jens Jeremies could not get free or into any space and Arsenal took over the game.

Bayern had no answer to the runs of Fredrik Ljungberg and the Swede came close to creating two great chances which last ditch defending repelled.

Bayern did not create a chance until the 42nd minute when a long ball from Effenberg went over Martin Keown and Elber set up Scholl to shoot wide.
