Spartak Moscow undid their good work of two weeks ago to let Olympique Lyon back into Champions League contention.
Two goals from Sonny Anderson saw the side that beat Arsenal 4-1 last month reinforce its reputation for poor way form.
Lyon were 3-0 up by half time and never looked back as they produced their best performance of the season so far.
Steve Marlet scored after only ninety seconds when Pierre Laigle released him on goal to slide the ball in under goalkeeper Alexander Filimonov.
To be fair to Spartak they played well on the break without producing any goals.
Their Brazilian strike force could not match Anderson.
He hit the target in the 31st minute when he dribbled on a Marlet pass and shot the ball in.
In the 41st minute he swayed into the penalty area and curled the ball into the net at full stretch.
Philippe Violeau hit the bar with a 70th minute free kick and Marlet wasted a great chance in the 85th minute from in front of goal but Lyon deserved their victory and Spartak have some familiar problems to overcome in the ten week gap in the tournament.
