Valencia frustrated the Panathinaikos attack to earn a good point in Athens.
The Spanish club can now concentrate of the Liga for the next ten weeks after losing top spot at the weekend to champions Deportivo La Coruna but Panathinaikos were hit by injuries for this match and failed to break down a determined defensive display from Hector Cuper's side.
Valencia sat back and allowed Panathinaikos to come onto them throughout the match but the Greek team lacked the final pass to get in on goal and for several passages the Spanish team ere comfortably holding on to the draw that became the summit of their ambitions as the game wore on to a conclusion.
Giorgos Karagounis hit the cross bar with a second half free kick but a depleted midfield lacking key play makers could not find the moves to get in behind the Valencia defence.
The visitors played with only John Carew in attack so goals did not look a priority for them with the score at 0-0 and the home team tiring and running out of ideas.
Top striker Nikos Liberopoulos only managed one shot on target when he drive at goal in the 26th minute but goalkeeper Santiago Canizares saved well.
Carew forced a save from Antonis Nikopolidis at close range in the 85th minute as Valencia made a rare raid forward but there was to be no tangible reward for the Norwegian's hard running.
