Canada won the Gold Cup in Los Angeles before a small crowd of less than 7,000 but the country still claimed its first ever football title at international level.
West Ham goalkeeper Craig Forrest was again their hero when he saved an 85th minute penalty from Faustino Asprilla that could have brought Colombia back into the game.
The 2-0 win over Colombia was the final upset that ended a tournament of surprising results.
Canada were tied with South Korea after the group stage but won on the toss of a coin to make the last eight and were spurred on to cash in that piece of good fortune.
The wet conditions even helped the Canadians as Colombian goalkeeper Diego Gomez allowed a header from Martin Nash after a driven corner to slip under his hands and over the goal line.
Gomez made another error for the second goal that sealed the win for Canada. He ran out of his goal and felled Jeffrey Clarke to give away a penalty that Carlo Corrazin smacked crisply into the net in the 68th minute.
