1995 African champions South Africa are the first country to make the last eight of the 1999 edition of the Nations Cup.

FC Zurich striker Shaun Bartlett hit his third goal of the competition to secure a 1-0 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo in an even game which saw South Africa suffer late pressure from the Congolese.

Watford striker Felix-Michel Ngonge saw goalkeeper Andre Arendse clear off the line late in the game but the South Africans had two similar chances in the first half including a good effort from captain Lucas Radebe.

The only goal came in the 44th minute when Bartlett cut inside a defender to find space and lifted the ball over the head of Democratic Republic of Congo goalkeeper Mkueni Mayala for an imaginative finish.
