African Nations Cup co-hosts Ghana are closing in on a place in the last eight of the competition after a 2-0 win over Togo.
Togo gave a confused performance at times and little wonder. Their German coach Gottlieb Goeller has contracted Malaria according to press briefings yesterday and tournament organisers this morning. It appears that Togo have fired their coach and Goeller is fit and well and flew out of the finals yesterday.
Abedi Pele's younger brother Ayew gave Ghana the lead but his shot was allowed into the net by Togo goalkeeper Kossi Agassa when he tried to grasp the low shot which hit his chest and rolled over the goal line.
The breakthrough came in the 28th minute and in the 35th Addo killed the game as a contest when he ran past the Togo defence and rounded the hapless Agassa to knock the ball into the net.
The second half was only notable for the first sending off of the tournament when Ghana defender Eben Dugbarty tried to kick a Togo forward to earn instant dismissal. Ghana drew their first game of the finals against Cameroon and looked poor again as they lost all attacking drive in the second half as the game stagnated.
