Riot police in Lagos used tear gas and several baton charges to disperse angry fans after this miserable 0-0 draw between African Nations co-hosts Nigeria and Congo.
Nigeria players - all but one of whom are based in lucrative European leagues - were pelted with plastic bottles and water containers as they left the pitch following a dire performance. Despite their talents another international competition has deteriorated into rows over money. Players have been on a long protest against bonuses this week and their public were angry over what they served up against a poor Congo team.
The Nigeria squad were locked in the changing rooms at the national stadium for their own safety and they should stay there if they want to play like this again.
The co-hosts of the competition were a disgrace in this game and left all the play to a muddled Congo side who could not take the initiative with poor finishing allowing the West Africans to escape with a draw. New Nigeria coach Jo Bonfrere must be stunned by the poor showing of his charges - most of them top rated international stars.
Nigeria are in Group D which is by far the toughest section of the qualifying round with Morocco and Tunisia set to take advantage of the Nigerian apathy.
Their fans had the right idea as their heroes shamed the competition with their attitude to this game. Congo came closest to winning this sorry game in the 7th minute but Chelsea's Celestine Babayaro cleared Mien's looping header from the goal line.
