2002 World Cup qualifier - Paraguay 2 Brazil 1

First Published: Jul 19, 2000

Ten man Brazil lost only their second ever World Cup qualifier in Asuncion last night as Paraguay's Jorge Campos smashed a great winner in the 83rd minute.

Paraguay - who were also reduced to ten men by a red card - now have nine points in the CONMEBOL qualifying table for the 2002 World Cup thanks to substitute Campos' great effort.

Rivaldo brought Brazil level to seemingly save a point but Campos ran on to control a long ball down field from Jose Luis Chilavert and ran past two defenders to smash a shot across Dida's goal into the far corner to delight the home fans. Brazil's only previous World Cup qualifying defeat came in Bolivia in 1993 and a year later they went to win the World Cup in the US.

Now coach Wanderley Luxemburgo must convince sceptical fans that his team can do the same.

Luxemburgo has already had an approach to coach FC Barcelona but has said he will stay with Brazil until the end of the 2002 tournament. he may not get the chance after this defeat. Brazil had previously drawn two matches in their qualifiers and are far behind group leaders Argentina who play host to Ecuador tonight.

Brazil have received a hostile reception from home fans so far and Luxemburgo dumped veteran defender Aldair from his squad after a mistake against Uruguay last month.

Paraguay's last win against Brazil came 21 years ago in a Copa America match but Luxemburgo's changes did little to help his side who conceded a goal in only the 6th minute of play.

Luxemburgo made five changes from the team who drew against Uruguay and paired Roque Junior and Edmilson in his new look defence. Paredes capped a good start by the home team to give Paraguay an early lead when he evaded all marking to head in a corner - a consistent weakness for Brazil at the moment.

Paredes caused panic with a later run into the area which was halted by Cafu and Paraguay were lucky not to see a penalty given to them.

Cafu's patience with his defensive role gave out just before half time with a crude hack at Paredes to earn a red card.

From that point on Brazil were always going to find it tough to get back into the match but Luxemburgo made changes at half time. On came Guilherme for Franca but he saw little of the ball. Brazil could not win even a corner until the 68th minute and press reaction to the performance as much as the result could force Luxemburgo out of a job before too much more damage is done to the 2002 campaign.

Roberto Carlos conjured a goal from nothing for an off-colour Rivaldo with a sweeping cross that allowed the Barcelona star to stoop into space and deflect the ball past Chilavert.

Brazil then mounted their best pieces of sustained pressure and Paraguay seemed set to take the draw especially after 68th minute substitute Victor Quintana was sent off for a high lunge on Roberto Carlos in the 79th minute.

Then came Campos' super show to pile the pressure on Luxemburgo and his unimpressive team.
