Peru came and got the draw they wanted from Montevideo as Uruguay failed to get a goal in this 2002 World Cup qualifier.
The closest Daniel Passarella's side came to a goal was in the 22nd minute when Peru defender Juan Pajuelo misdirected a clearance against his own bar as Peru tried to stiffen a defence that had played in three recent defeats.
The visitors were also diminished by injuries and suspensions and basically turned the match into what looked like a training exercise as they refused to come out of their own half. Uruguay were stymied by the tactics and resorted to hopeful crosses to a short attack that is weak in the air and the ball was regularly cleared by the unambitious defence.
Alvaro Recoba got into space in the 49th minute but pulled his shot wide and Uruguay were poor on the night.
