Uruguay stand on six points after three matches in the CONMEBOL qualifying zone for the 2002 World Cup.

A 2-1 win in Montevideo over Chile sees the Uruguayans prominent in the pack chasing leaders Argentina and second place Brazil.

Dario Silva started a flurry of goal scoring before half time with a left foot drive in the 35th minute but he conceded a penalty kick two minutes later for a hand ball offence in his penalty area.

Inter Milan's Ivan Zamorano slammed in the spot kick to level the score but Uruguay pressed on for a winner and it came in the 42nd minute when Chile failed to clear a cross of Juventus defender Paolo Montero struck in a low shot.
