2002 World Cup - Peru 0 Brazil 1

First Published: Jun 05, 2000

A match of mixed fortunes for Brazil in Lima saw them narrowly beat Peru in this 2002 World Cup qualifier.

The Brazilians needed a goal from defender Antonio Carlos to register their second win in the CONMEBOL qualifying section. Brazil now have seven points from three matches but were let down by returning striker Edmundo who was red carded.

Antonio Carlos produced a great finish to give Brazil the win. A hopeful ball forward in the 35th minute saw the defender turn and shoot past goalkeeper Miguel Miranda.

An 88th minute shot which screwed wide from Roberto Palacios was the closest the home side came to drawing the match but Brazil retreated into defence and fouling for most of the game once they had the lead as Peru pushed forward.

The low point came when Edmundo produced a horror tackle in the 80th minute to earn an instant dismissal. 'O Animal' was recalled by coach Wanderley Luxemburgo after a two year absence from the national team but he showed none of his good league form and his two-footed lunge was very ugly. He may not get another chance at this level.
