2002 World Cup - Paraguay 3 Ecuador 1

First Published: Jun 05, 2000

Paraguay saw striker Hugo Brizuela hot two goals in Asuncion to confirm a 3-1 victory against Ecuador in this 2002 World Cup qualifier.

Brizuela was only playing because Bayern Munich had refused to let teenage star Roque Santa Cruz travel to play in the game leading Paraguayan captain Jose Luis Chilavert to brand the German champions "racist" in their attitude.

Brizuela seized his chance to help Paraguay to claim six points from two matches in their 2002 matches so far.

Delio Toledo had put the home side into the lead by heading in a corner in the 11th minute and Brizuela turned a hit in a Richard Baez through pass in the 43rd minute. They let their lead slip in the 48th minute when substitute Ariel Graziani headed in a deep cross for Ecuador.

Brizuela confirmed the win by creating a goal for himself with a dipping shot from the edge of the penalty area.
